Assad Regime Toppled After Decades of Rule
The decades-long rule of President Bashar al-Assad in Syria has come to an end following a coordinated offensive by the Free Syrian Union (FSU), a coalition of opposition forces. Assad fled Damascus late last month after losing control of the capital.
The FSU is a coalition of Syrian opposition groups uniting diverse factions, including defectors from Assad’s military, ethnic minorities, and pro-democracy activists. Their success was bolstered by international support and dwindling backing for Assad from his key ally, Russia.
– November 2024: FSU launches a major offensive on Damascus. – December 1, 2024: Assad flees to Latakia. – December 5, 2024: Presidential Palace falls to FSU forces.
Though Assad is gone, challenges remain. Syria faces a monumental task in rebuilding its cities and healing its divided communities. Analysts warn the road to peace will require sustained international support and a focus on reconciliation.
